Who Is Doris Day? 5 Facts On The Legendary Actress & Singer

Legendary actress Doris Day died on Monday at her Carmel Valley, California, home, leaving behind an fantastic legacy of classic films, music and an incredible passion for animal advocacy.

She was America's girl next door, in what's often referred to as a "simpler time".

The Foundation said today that the actress was surrounded by a few close friends at the time of her passing. A statement by the Doris Day Foundation revealed that the actress "had been in excellent physical health for her age" but had recently contracted "a serious case of pneumonia". She was a true star in more ways than one.

Luckily for Day, she wasn't called upon to sing "Que Sera, Sera" after that. Hitchcock did not originally want Day in the film, but to get Stewart onboard, he had to agree to also hire Day and give her a song in the film penned by the famed songwriting duo Jay Livingston and Ray Evans, the writers behind such classics as "Silver Bells" and "Mona Lisa". She then went to television with "The Doris Day Show" which ran for five seasons and 128 episodes from 1966-1973. Her 1976 tell-all book, "Doris Day: Her Own Story", chronicled her money troubles and three failed marriages, contrasting with the happy publicity of her Hollywood career.

She was given a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004. Among her popular films were "Please Don't Eat the Daisies" and "The Pajama Game", and she became well known for the Oscar-winning song "Que Sera, Sera". Because she said, from the animals there's nothing but unconditional love. Her Foundation notes that almost 300 fans gathered in Carmel last month to celebrate her 97th birthday on April 3. "We will miss her lovely smile". "He cheated on Doris, knocked her around and humiliated her in public", Standard reports, but he also fathered her child, Terry Melcher.

Day, who grew up as Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff in Evanston, made the comments in an audio recording when city officials voted to name a stretch of Walnut Street Downtown "Doris Day Way" in her honor. Day was "embarrassed to talk about herself or to receive accolades because she loved working", says manager Bob Bashara. I think Doris is a very sexy lady who doesn't know how sexy she is.

With her lilting contralto, wholesome blonde beauty and glowing smile, she was a top box office draw known for such films as "Pillow Talk" and "That Touch of Mink".

The actress kept up a squeaky clean image in her choice of movie roles - famously turning down the role of Mrs Robinson in the hit film "The Graduate" as being too racy.

And so it was just this enormously loving relationship, which was more hard when she was at the height of her Hollywood career because she wasn't there all the time.

Terry Melcher, her only son, lived in a home on Cielo Drive in Los Angeles with his then-girlfriend, actor Candice Bergen. While Day found fame and fortune during these decades, she rarely found happiness, always hoping to start a family that stayed together, something that constantly evaded her with various dramatic relationships with men who turned out to treat her not so well.
