Trump says he’s ‘very surprised’ Don Jr. has been subpoenaed

"He ought to be held in contempt, and there's no question with Donald Trump Jr. about any sort of privilege to avoid this kind of questioning", Blumenthal responded. Richard Burr of North Carolina.

"I think that it's over", the Kentucky senator said, after discussing the depth of Mueller's investigation into the matter.

A source close to Trump Jr. said there was an agreement between the president's son and the committee that he would only have to come in and testify once as long as he was willing to stay for as long as they'd like, which the source said he did. He called Mueller's report "the Bible" and that "they say he did nothing wrong".

But Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, a Republican member of the panel, said he thinks the criticism of Burr is "a fundamental misunderstanding of what the Senate intelligence committee is about", which is congressional oversight and not prosecution.

Trump Jr. already has provided exhaustive testimony to Congress. "The son of the president doesn't have any of those privileges", he said.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) speaks during a hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington on June 6, 2018.

"Endless investigations_by either party_won't change the fact that there was NO collusion. It's time to focus on ISSUES, not investigations", tweeted House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.

It was the first known legal summons issued to a member of the president's family to force testimony in the ongoing investigation and comes after special counsel Robert Mueller declined to accuse Trump's 2016 campaign of criminal conspiracy to collude with the Russians.

In addition, McConnell's reiteration that the case is closed without backing the subpoena in any way essentially undercuts any legitimate claim the Senate Intelligence Committee has to attempt enforcement of the subpoena-rendering, in political terms, the Burr subpoena meaningless. "Apparently the Republican chair of the Senate Intel Committee didn't get the memo from the Majority leader that this case was closed." he said.

The Virginia Democrat said the intelligence panel also wants to see the underlying evidence in Mueller's report, a request that House lawmakers have also made.

But even that was not enough to stop the onslaught, as every single Fox News primetime show on Thursday night had major segments on this story-and most of the hosts criticized either Burr, McConnell, or both for this Trump, Jr., subpoena. Cohen told a House committee in February that he had briefed Trump Jr. approximately 10 times about a plan to build a Trump Tower in Moscow before the presidential election.

When asked if Trump Jr. told his father about the meeting, he told senators, "I did not".
