Established by John F. Kennedy in 1963, the Presidential Medal of Freedom is bestowed upon those who have made an "especially meritorious" contribution to USA security or national interests, world peace, cultural pursuits or other non-specified endeavors. Watch live in the video player above.

Trump, who has a long history with Woods, said in a tweet after the Masters that he had congratulated the golfer on the win and his comeback, announcing that he would be giving him the award.

Woods, the 81-time PGA TOUR victor and two-time FedExCup champion, joins Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Charlie Sifford as the only TOUR players to receive the honor.

The golf pro suffered a hit to his image when a 2009 vehicle crash led to the revelation that he had cheated on his wife in a string of affairs.

Still, Devine said, when he stacks up Woods' accomplishments against other recipients, he believes Woods is deserving and calls his Masters victory "the greatest comeback in sports of all time".

Woods said the important thing was to respect the office of the presidency, regardless of who happened to be occupying the White House.

Since then, Mr. Trump has named a villa after him at the Trump National Doral Miami.

Woods is the fourth professional golfer to receive the award.

Woods and Trump are longtime business and golf partners, and Woods lives not far from Trump's Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida.

Throughout his 24-year career, Woods has captured 81 PGA tournament titles, including 15 majors.

Trump briefly alluded to Woods' career and personal downfall that includes his public divorce from wife Elin Nordegren and ensuing struggles on the course for years that preceded his comeback capped by last month's win at Augusta. According to Bloomberg, Woods and Trump are teaming up to design a golf course in Dubai. Charles Sifford, the first African American to play on the PGA Tour, received the medal from President Barack Obama in 2014.

In the age of President Trump, even renowned golfer Tiger Woods is great again - and that's just too much for some people. For example, Obama awarded the Medal of Freedom to Bruce Springsteen, who performed in concerts to support Obama's election efforts. But Rush Limbaugh, who recently played with the President, says it's all in good fun. He also awarded it to his vice president, Joe Biden.

To be noted that it is given to persons who have made "an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavours". He said Woods has not been one to take stands on political issues, but should have declined the award in this case.
