President Xi congratulates Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn on his coronation

Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn will be carried on a golden palanquin through Bangkok's historic heart Sunday, a second day of coronation rituals which will bring the public up close to their powerful monarch.

Thailand's newly crowned King Maha Vajiralongkorn is seen during his coronation procession, in Bangkok, Thailand May 5, 2019.

On Friday, the king will first visit the Temple of the Emerald Buddha to pay respect to the Buddha image, one of Thailand's most sacred relics, before moving to the Grand Palace.

Crowds of well-wishers clad in yellow, a color associated with the monarch, lined the procession route in a spectacle not seen for almost seven decades.

Vajiralongkorn assumed the throne following the death of his father in 2016, becoming King Rama X. He is the 10th member of the Chakri dynasty, which has ruled Thailand since Rama I took the throne in 1782.

Compared to his father, who was considered the patriarch of the country, King Vajiralongkorn has been relatively more aloof.

While Thailand has been a constitutional monarchy since 1932, the king wields enormous power and influence in Thailand and is seen as the spiritual protector of the people.

Thailand has crowned its new King Maha Vajiralongkorn, marking the first ascension of a new monarch in seven decades.

Early Sunday, the king bestowed royal titles on family members who crawled to his throne in a striking show of deference to the monarch, who was joined by his new Queen Suthida.

The king and queen stayed the night in the royal residence, where a Siamese cat and chicken were placed on a pillow as part of housewarming rituals.

"I shall continue, preserve and build upon the royal legacy and shall reign with righteousness for the benefit and happiness of the people forever", the king said as his first royal command. "Long live the King", well-wishers chanted, waving yellow flags as they watched the procession with His Majesty arrayed in gold on the palanquin.

"I will carry on, preserve and extend, and forever reign with righteousness for the benefit of the people", the king said with his first royal command, similar to the oath his late father king Bhumibol Adulyadej gave nearly seven decades ago.

"When the auspicious time arrived, the royal astrologer hit the Gong of Victory, the scribe and the royal augur began inscribing on the Royal Golden Plaques the official title of the King and the King's Horoscope". Thailand's army plays a major role in the country's politics and the country is now ruled by a military junta since a 2014 coup. His 86-year-old mother, known as Queen Sirikit, was granted a new official title of Queen Mother. The king also received and wore five articles of the royal regalia from the chief Brahmin, signifying full kingship.

The teenager is the king's son from his third marriage. The rite, known as the Royal Purification Ceremony, took place amid music from drums, conch shells and other instruments.

Born on June 3, 1978, she graduated with a Communication Arts degree in 2000 from the Catholic-run Assumption University of Thailand.
