"Avengers: Endgame" continues to dominate at the box office and has become the second highest grossing movie of all time.

The Marvel superhero film pushed past the $2 billion mark in its second week in movie theaters, Variety confirmed on Sunday (May 5). Only five films have ever reached $2 billion, including 2018's Avengers: Infinity War.

Endgame has earned about $620 million in the US and, along with the $1.569 billion in overseas ticket sales, the film is now in second place behind Avatar for the biggest movie opening. Only two films in history - "Avatar" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" - have earned over a billion dollars from the 3D format.

Now, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are hoping that Endgame further goes and crushes another James Cameron-directorial titled Avatar, which is currently the highest-grossing movie of all time, after the filmmaker said he hopes "we'll start getting Avenger fatigue here pretty soon".

Avengers: Endgame has been out for a week and is already enjoying a staggering level of success.

Disney is projected to have a dominant year at the box office.

Lionsgate's "Long Shot", a raunchy R-rated romantic comedy starring Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron, nabbed the No. 3 spot with a tepid $10 million from 3,230 screens.

That included a record $357 million opening weekend in North America. UglyDolls didn't fare much better at number 4, with $8.5 million. That brings Marvel Studios' first release of the year up to $420 million. The voices of Kelly Clarkson, Nick Jonas, Wanda Sykes and Janelle Monae are featured. But even another 59% drop could still put Endgame on top for a third weekend in a row. With Detective Pikachu coming to theaters next week, it's fairly unlikely, but Endgame has proven that nothing is impossible for this movie.
