Trump announces resignation of DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen

"I have agreed to stay on as Secretary through Wednesday, April 10th to assist with an orderly transition and ensure that key DHS missions are not impacted", she said. The people described mounting frustrations on both sides, with Trump exasperated at the situation at the border and Nielsen frustrated by White House actions she felt were counterproductive.

Commissioner Kevin McAleenan is a veteran border official, according to The Associated Press.

Nielsen initially joined the Trump administration in January 2017 as a an assistant to Trump's first Department of Homeland Security (DHS) secretary, John Kelly. A senior administration official said Trump asked for Nielsen's resignation and she gave it.

Trump announced shortly after that McAleenan would be taking over as the acting DHS secretary. The president has reportedly expressed displeasure with her job performance. She was clearly aware that the president was unhappy with her. She did not realize how dire it was when she left the U.S. last weekend, but quickly did, as she abruptly returned.

Sources have said Nielsen has been on thin ice before.

Democrats immediately reacted to the news. The Trump administration has bumped up against legal restrictions and court rulings that have hamstrung many of its major efforts to remake border security.

Trump recently threatened to close the border with Mexico, or parts of it, if Congress did not change US laws to fix what he called immigration "loopholes".

Nielsen was accused last month of misleading Congress by the chairman of the House Committee of Homeland Security after she claimed under oath that migrant children were not being detained in "cages". "Although Commissioner McAleenan will have his work cut out for him, I am confident the department is in capable hands".

On Friday, US media reported that Trump also pulled his nominee to lead the Immigration and Customs Enforcement department - saying he wanted someone "tougher" at the helm of the Homeland Security sub-agency. Nielsen was unaware what was happening until after the nomination had been pulled, a person familiar with the news said.

Recently, the President has spoken several times about the idea of shutting down the southern border entirely.

"Mexico must apprehend all illegals and not let them make the long march up to the United States, or we will have no other choice than to Close the Border and/or institute Tariffs", Trump wrote.

"Right now, we have an emergency on our hands".

The move came about a week after she had blasted a letter to Congress pleading that they allocate funds to increase the number of beds at existing immigrant detention centers, as well as expand the number of temporary shelters.
