There were no further goals on the night, meaning Liverpool will head to the second leg next week as the overwhelming favourites to progress to the last four.

City are in action before Liverpool on Sunday at Selhurst Park, where they face Crystal Palace.

The German indicated that his team need to be more disciplined at Estádio do Dragão if they are to reach the Champions League semi-finals, believing dead-ball situations to be one of Porto's best avenues of attack.

The Reds did most of the pressing in the second half, Sadio Mane coming closest from long range, but they couldn't find a third that would have severely damaged any hopes of Porto coming back.

Liverpool rarely threatened the Porto goal in the second half but with a two-goal advantage and no away goals conceded, Klopp will be pleased with the professional performance.

Neither of these teams can really afford to lose any more games if they are to achieve their respective goals of winning the Premier League and qualifying for the Champions League.

Jordan Henderson, playing in a more advanced midfield position than normal, cut the visitors' defence open for the England global to square for Firmino to tap into an empty net.

"Obviously we know it's going to be a tough game and to score two good goals was very important but the clean sheet was the most important thing", the Liverpool defender added.

Alisson's left foot denied him at first after he was slid in behind the Reds' defence, before he shot straight at the Brazilian as Liverpool failed to clear a corner and left the striker unmarked in the box.

But he followed up an encouraging display last Friday against Southampton, in which he opened his goal-scoring account for Liverpool, by making an impression against the Portuguese champions. Keita was lively throughout the game as he played a number of excellent passes and was involved in the buildup to Firminho's goal.

Against Manchester City and Roma last season and this year against Bayern Munich, Liverpool have not shied away from strong rivals and they can go up against any opponents in Europe.

The England global set-up Sadio Mane with a perfectly weighted clipped ball in the second half, but the goal was rightly ruled out for offside. Porto must be sick of the sight of Liverpool in the Champions League.

"2-0 is a really good result, I would have taken it before the game and I take it now", said Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp. "It will be a really intense atmosphere there, and we have to be ready for that, but I'm pretty sure we are".
