The Friends of Notre Dame foundation has even been seeking to raise a massive €150 million ($180 million) from French citizens and Francophiles in the USA to help foot the bill for a major facelift.

The Paris prosecutors' office says investigators are treating the blaze that destroyed part of Notre Dame as an accident for now.

"This cathedral Notre-Dame, we will rebuild", he wrote in French on Twitter.

Hours after the inferno started, firefighters were able to determine a crucial and positive observation: The main structure of the cathedral was saved and that the two iconic towers at the front entrance of the cathedral, are intact and have been saved, too.

The mayor of Paris has called the strength of the fire "terrible".

Since then, it has undergone numerous restoration works, and ironically, latest restoration works may result in its final destruction.

French President Emmanuel Macron, who canceled a planned address to the nation about the ongoing "yellow vest" crisis, rushed to the scene and straight into meetings at the Paris police headquarters nearby.

The spire and roof of the cathedral collapsed as flames chewed at the building Monday. The city's mayor, Anne Hidalgo, said the significant collection of art work and holy objects inside the church had been recovered. He pledged to rebuild the church and said he would seek global help to do so.

The archbishop of Paris called on all priests in Paris to ring church bells as a gesture of solidarity for Notre-Dame.

"The lead that protects the wooden spire from the elements, which dates from the mid-nineteenth century, has fallen into disrepair, and because of water damage to the wooden structure beneath, is structurally compromised", according to the Notre Dame website.

The cathedral is a world-wide Parisian icon and site of some of the most important moments in the history of France.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May has said her thoughts are "with the people of France tonight and with the emergency services who are fighting the bad blaze at Notre-Dame cathedral".

He added: "We can be only horrified by what we see".
