At this rate, a Model 3 Long Range operating at peak efficiency can recover up to 75 miles of charge in 5 minutes and charge at rates of up to 1,000 miles per hour.

In getting ready for the hardware, Tesla will roll out a software update to vehicles that includes On-Route Battery Warmup, a mode that smartly heats up the battery to the optimal temperature to reduce charge times in cold weather. It uses similar tech to Tesla's Powerpack.

The ability to charge more vehicles per day is further enhanced by the fact the new cabinet doesn't require the power to be shared with another vehicle in the next stall, so both cars can reach the peak 250kW output at the same time.

Good news for Tesla drivers: Charging is about to get easier. It has plans to bump up the charge rates at more than 12,000 V2 Superchargers from 125kW to 145kW in coming weeks. Combined with other improvements we're announcing today, V3 Supercharging will ultimately cut the amount of time customers spend charging by an average of 50%, as modeled on our fleet data.

"Supercharger stations with V3's new power electronics are created to enable any owner to charge at the full power their battery can take - no more splitting power with a vehicle in the stall next to you", the company says. Design-wise, V3 Superchargers look the same as V2, but come with a thicker charging cable. More will become available in this year's second and third quarter, with Europe and Asia-Pacific regions following by the end of the year.

How much the Models S and X will benefit is as yet unknown; Tesla confirmed with The Driven earlier this week that the "new" Standard, Long Range and Performance Model S and Long Range and Performance Model X will continue to use the 18650 battery cells.
