The last rubout of that type was in 1985, when Gambino boss Paul Castellano was shot dead in front of Sparks Steak House in Manhattan, reportedly on orders by Gotti.

No arrests were immediately made and police were scouring for video and looking for witnesses to the shooting, police said.

Witnesses told local media of hearing at least six shots coming from outside, and seeing Cali's family members rushing outside and crying next to his body.

Gotti, who later died in prison, took over the Gambino family at the time.

Shortly after, emergency responders arrived on the scene and Cali, who was born in New York City, was transported to Staten Island University North Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Genovese, Gambino, Lucchese, Colombo and Bonanno mafia families are believed to have controlled organised crime in NY for decades.

Cali's only criminal conviction came from an extortion charge in 2008 for trying to shake down a trucker; he spent 16 months in prison.

In 2015, the Advance reported that Cali was believed to be the leader of the Gambino crime family.

A native of Sicily, Cali has deep mob roots, and his wife is the niece of Gambino capo John Gambino. Gotti and his turncoat underboss, Sammy "Bull" Gravano reportedly watched the action from nearby.

Two of the most notorious Gambino capos, John Gotti (left) and Paul Castellano (right), are seen above. Cali was married to Rosaria Inzerillo.

Rudolph W. Giuliani, who at the time was the United States Attorney for the Southern District of NY, condemned the killings and vowed to find those responsible.

The investigation exposed a drug trafficking partnership between the Gambinos and the Sicilian Mafia.

Unlike other mobsters, Cali had few run-ins with the law.

The Gambino family was once considered the biggest organised crime group in the USA, the New York Times reports, but began to decline after Gotti and other senior figures were jailed.

On June 4, 2008, Cali pleaded guilty to conspiring to extort money.
