Slowly but surely, it appears that Facebook is getting its "family of apps" back online.

Earlier on Thursday, the outage-tracking service DownDetector showed significantly fewer people having issues accessing Facebook and Instagram compared to Wednesday, when the outage began.

It wasn't just Queensland and New Zealand residents either, as there were also reports of calls being made to 911 in California, and other places in the US.

In 2008, Facebook was knocked offline by a bug that affected many of its 80 million users.

We've asked Facebook how it intends to resolve its issues with angry advertisers, but did not receive an immediate reply.

The California firm which has more than 2 billion users acknowledged the outage after users noted on Twitter they could not access Facebook or had limited functionality.

"We're very sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate everyone's patience", Facebook said.

Facebook first publicly addressed the issue Wednesday afternoon, acknowledging in a tweet that "some people are now having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps".

The outage came amid a period of turmoil for Facebook, which appeared to intensify Thursday with the announcement of the departure of two senior executives at the social network.

"As people become more reliant on digital services like Facebook, Instagram and Youtube, we are witnessing an ever growing number for problems during outages", Sanders said.

While Facebook said it has "resolved its issues", the update was sparse on details.

Argentina-based designer Rebecca Brooker told the BBC that Facebook's outage severely affected her work.

"As we've said before, we are cooperating with investigators and take those probes seriously".

Nearly a day after users began struggling to log in and post to Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, the company has given an explanation: a technical error.

Shares of Facebook were down more than 1.5 percent Thursday afternoon.
