Former Real Madrid and Manchester United coach Jose Mourinho has been sentenced to one year in prison and a fine estimated to be around 2.2 million euros for tax evasion.

However, he struck a deal with Spanish prosecutors previous year, which was ratified at a court on Tuesday.

Mourinho still has to pay almost 2 million euros ($2.2 million) to tax authorities as part of the deal.

Mourinho is one of the most successful coaches in modern European soccer, winning league titles with Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Porto.

Prosecutors believe by ceding his image rights to a series of companies based in tax havens.

The charges relate to undeclared revenue regarding his image rights in 2011 and 2012 while he was the manager of Real Madrid.

They argued that was created to obscure his financial gain from such deals - and he left it undeclared in his tax statements after he moved to Spain.

EL Pais reports that Mourinho pleaded guilty to avoid any jail time and is expected to pay around £1.75million to the court.

Under Spanish law, jail terms under two years can be served under probation.

Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Neymar have also found themselves embroiled in legal battles with the Spanish tax authorities.
