It's being pushed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a freshman Democrat from NY who has captured the enthusiasm of the left wing.

The Green New Deal resolution unveiled last Thursday is a nonbinding measure meant to define the scope of what future legislation requires to make a serious dent in surging greenhouse gas emissions.

Some Democrats hit back at the Republican attempt to call for a vote on the resolution before hearings and debates take place, calling it a "cynical" move.

The Green New Deal has support from dozens of House Democrats along with most the Democratic Party's quickly-expanding 2020 presidential field. Vermont Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders, who's likely to enter the Democratic primary soon, is also a supporter.

"I don't need to co-sponsor every bill that others think they need to co-sponsor to show my progressive politics", Brown told reporters.

"We're going to voting on that in the Senate".

"I really don't like their policy of taking away your auto, of taking away your airplane rights", President Donald Trump said at a rally in El Paso, Texas, on Monday, referring to the memo. Sean McGarvey, president of the North America's Building Trades Unions, representing construction workers across all sectors including energy, said his staff had been contacted by Markey's office about the Green New Deal, but said his members are skeptical of "green job" promises.

Democratic Sens. Elizabeth Warren of MA and Cory Booker of New Jersey, who have both announced their bids for the 2020 nomination, have signed on as Senate co-sponsors of the Green New Deal.
