Convicted El Chapo faces rest of his life behind bars

Emma Coronel Aispuro, center, leaves Brooklyn federal court in NY, after attending the trial of her husband Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, on January 17, 2019. The jury found Guzman guilty on 17 counts that covered a range of drug crimes related to narcotics trafficking and conspiracies to kill rivals.

Guzman was convicted of smuggling over 200 tons of cocaine to the USA over a 25 year period, earning billions of dollars in profits for his cartel, then the world's largest, and now faces a life sentence.

During the verdict, Guzman, whose nickname "El Chapo" means "shorty", appeared emotionless, according to reports.

The 11-week trial featured testimonies from more than 50 witnesses and offered one of the most detailed insights into the Sinaloa Cartel - named after the state in Mexico where El Chapo was born - ever.

Mexico has been mired for 12 years in a deadly military-led war against drug gangs. Cogan said it made him "very proud to be an American".

U.S. District Judge Brian Cogan lauded the jury's meticulous attention to detail and the "remarkable" approach it took toward deliberations.

The most detailed evidence against Guzman came from more than a dozen former associates who struck deals to cooperate with US prosecutors.

A string of former workers gave evidence against Guzman, 61, with one telling how he shot a man and ordered him to be buried while still alive. "Once that door is open, it can't be closed again", he said.

The U.S. Justice Department said in 2017 it sought forfeiture of more than $14 billion in drug proceeds and illicit profits from Guzman.

The defense team called only one witness and was trying question the credibility of prosecution witnesses during the trial. The same day, he grinned broadly at audience member Alejandro Edda, the Mexican actor who plays Guzman in the Netflix drama "Narcos".

In 2015, he pulled off another jail break, escaping a maximum-security prison through a 10-metre deep tunnel. He was finally recaptured in January 2016.

El Chapo is the head of the notorious Sinaloa drug cartel in Mexico, which is believed to be the largest supplier of drugs to the U.S.

Together, they are the biggest producers of drugs sold on US streets.
