The SAG Awards saved the surprises for the winners

Sandra Oh has won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series.

The second round of Oscar voting, during which Academy members will determine the victor from each set of nominees, will take place between February 12 and 19; the 91st annual Academy Awards will be held on February 24 (February 25 AEDT). They are competing with the stars of superhero flick "Black Panther", historical dramedy "BlacKkKlansman", romantic comedy "Crazy Rich Asians" and Golden Globes best drama victor "Bohemian Rhapsody". Mahershala Ali received the trophy for best supporting actor in a movie for his role as jazz pianist Don Shirley.

"Black Panther" took the top award at Sunday's 25th Screen Actors Guild Awards, giving Ryan Coogler's superhero sensation its most significant honor yet and potentially setting it up for more wins at the Academy Awards.

"We know what it's like to be told there isn't a screen for you to be featured on, a stage for you to be featured on". It won best ensemble in a comedy series, as well as individual honors Rachel Brosnahan and Tony Shalhoub, whose win was a surprise in a category that included Bill Hader ("Barry") and Michael Douglas ("The Kominsky Method").

Meanwhile, the best actor awards for film went to Glenn Close for The Wife and Rami Malek for his performance as Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody.

"SAG also recognized M*A*S*H" TV star Alan Alda with a lifetime achievement award.

As for her character of Eve and what people can learn from her, Oh said people should "embrace your own darkness and shadow because if you don't make space for it, it'll come and destroy you, as she's coming after Eve to destroy her".

"It may never, ever have been more urgent to see the world through another person's eyes", Alda said, noting the divisive present political landscape.

The best picture victor at the Academy Awards has always first been nominated for best ensemble by the SAG Awards except in 1996, when Braveheart won best picture, and past year, when Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water overcame the SAG omission to win best picture.

The 32-year-old entertainer is nominated for two awards at the event this evening - Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role and also Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture alongside the A Star Is Born ensemble.

"My wish for all of us is let's stay playful, lets have fun and let's keep searching", Alda added. "Actors can help, a little, just by doing what we do".

Only one film in the last 23 years has won the prestigious best picture Oscar without being nominated for SAG's ensemble prize. TNT and TBS subscribers can also watch live using the networks' websites, mobile apps, and connected device apps (Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire).
