Sam Darnold approved Adam Gase hire by Jets

ESPN reported Tuesday McCarthy would only return to coaching next season with the New York Jets, but the Jets will reportedly hire former Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase for the position.

Gase was Denver's quarterbacks coach when Manning signed with the Broncos in 2012.

McCarthy's decision to skip coaching in 2019 came on the same day that his successor, Matt LaFleur, was introduced as the Packers' new head coach.

The former Packers coach refused to interview with the Cleveland Browns, according to ESPN. They both agreed that this marriage would not have worked, as the Jets were not satisfied with the staff, specifically the offensive coordinator that Rhule wanted to bring in to help groom Sam Darnold. I also think sometimes it's a good thing when you really have to reflect on.

Gase had control over the 53-man roster in Miami, but it's safe to say he'll share some of that authority with Jets' general manager Mike Maccagnan now. At the same time, I'm going to be me.

Those factors combined, Johnson insisted leading into the team's search, made the Jets an attractive spot for a head coach to land. Gase's first National Football League job came in 2003 under Steve Mariucci in Detroit, where he worked his way up to quarterbacks coach in five years with the Lions. That remains the NFL's single-season record.

Gase's Dolphins were particularly good in one-score games, going 7-1 in those situations this season and 20-6 in three years.

Darnold realizes that part of Gase's resume, and he doesn't see why he can't be added to it as well.
