The Cardinals fired first-year coach Steve Wilks at the end of a 3-13 campaign that sees the team hold the first pick in April's draft.

McDaniels interviewed last week with Green Bay to replace Mike McCarthy but the Packers have chose to hire Titans offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur instead leaving him no choice but to return under head coach Bill Belichick for a 16th year.

Kingsbury also played quarterback at both the college and pro levels.

He also worked with Johnny Manziel at Texas A&M and Case Keenum at Houston.

"I've said before, I think I have one of the best jobs in the world", McDaniels added Tuesday.

The Cardinals have missed the playoffs in three straight seasons. By most measures, he was the worst starting quarterback in football. Mike McCarthy refused to interview with them despite being fired by the Green Bay Packers in recent days, and Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy did the same. Even David Johnson struggled in the Cardinals' offense.

Team president Mark Murphy and GM Brian Gutekunst interviewed seven candidates between Friday and Sunday: McDaniels and Patriots defensive coordinator Brian Flores on Friday, Saints assistant head coach Dan Campbell, Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael and Buccaneers offensive coordinator Todd Monken on Saturday and former Dolphins coach Adam Gase and Titans offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur on Sunday.

Kingsbury will become the third head coach in the NFC West who is under the age of 40.
