According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the predominant flu strain circulating is not H1N1, which targets children. And activity is "starting to increase" in this season, Schultz said. People with pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes and asthma are more susceptible to catching the flu.

While Allison had mild asthma, about half of children who die from the flu are otherwise healthy, according to the CDC. There were no recent cases of H1N1 in Jackson County, Landrum said. "But it's odd that in the Southeast, the H3N2 virus is more common".

Kentucky reports Louisville is one of the hardest-hit areas right now, with more than 550 confirmed cases recently and 882 cases overall this flu season. When that strain predominated, almost 1 million Americans were hospitalized and 80,000 died.

"The level of activity we have at this point is actually a little bit lower than what we saw at the same point past year", Pedati said.

"We've seen some increases in a couple different parts of the state, particularly the southeast and southwest regions of the state", she said.

Arkansas and Oklahoma have lost 21 people to the flu since September. A total of 12 children had died from the flu at the end of week 51 a year ago. Flu season typically runs from October through May.

"Anybody who hasn't been vaccinated should go and get vaccinated", she said.

While it's too early to tell just how effective this year's flu shot is, the vaccine protects against this year's most prevalent strain.

The CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older get vaccinated.

It's not too late to get your flu shot.

"This death is an unfortunate reminder the flu virus does have the potential to cause severe illness and death, especially in the very young, very old, or those who have underlying health conditions", said Medical Director Dr. Caitlin Pedati.

When you are sick, try to limit your contact with others. Additionally, flu vaccines continue to be available at many pharmacies and grocery stores, and through primary care physicians and some specialists.
