Bryce Harper momentum builds after long Phillies sit-down

After the report from The Athletic's Jim Bowden about the Nationals' latest offer being "much more" that the $300 million offer at the end of the season, it appears as though the Nats may at least compete with the Phillies financially if they secure Machado.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported Sunday, citing three sources, Philadelphia has "emerged as the clear-cut favorite" to sign the 26-year-old. Nats executives are now calling a reunion with Harper a "long shot" and have not had contact with Harper in over a month according to the report.

The White Sox and Phillies have both finished below.500 in each of the last six seasons. Middleton told Skversky that the meeting was "really positive", and that they "got to understand what [Bryce] would be like for the clubhouse and community".

It sounds as if the Phillies will do something stupid.

The team may have already sent that message after signing Troy Tulowitzki, but some fans still held out hope considering Tulowitzki's low cost and injury history. The Yankees were thought to be his preference, meaning he may just take the most money on the table of the two remaining teams, and that's likely to come from Philadelphia. Jim Thome, special assistant to general manager Rick Hahn said on MLB Network last week that Hahn and vice president Ken Williams are "working hard" and that signing Machado "would be wonderful". Machado would be a big step towards getting back to that goal. However, he had a career-high 15 home runs, had his fourth straight season of driving in 60 or more runs (62), and won his second Gold Glove of his career. However, the Yankees clearly signed him to potentially serve as a placeholder for Gregorius or a reserve infielder.

Baltimore Orioles' Manny Machado laughs in the dugout during the seventh inning of a game against the White Sox Tuesday, May 22, 2018, in Chicago.
