India have already named 13-man squad for the Sydney Test which surprisingly features out of form opener KL Rahul as well.

Captain Tim Paine said a final inspection of the SCG pitch will decide Australia's plans for the fourth Test as the hosts look to deny India a series victory.

While the hosts certainly missed their star duo in Steve Smith and David Warner, they still have a chance to level the series at Sydney, where in this century, they have just lost two Tests and both against their arch-rivals England.

Preview: When a team is leading 2-1 in a country where they have never won a series in almost seven decades of trying, you would expect it to be a well-oiled, finely-tuned machine. Kohli was more contained than usual at the other end, ensuring that Australia are ground to dust with no Mitchell Marsh to do the hard yards.

The BCCI announced this a little over an hour after Virat Kohli told reporters Wednesday at the SCG that Ashwin had been ruled out and not considered for selection.

Ishant is experiencing some left rib cage discomfort and the team management did not want to risk him during the fourth Test match in Sydney.

As per a report by Cricket Australia, Ashwin, who was not fit enough to take part in the Boxing Day Test match, took part in a solo session in the indoor centre facilities under the supervision of team physiotherapist Patrick Farhart and another support staff member.

"He's very important for sure". In Test cricket, he's a vital part of this team and we wanted him to be 100 percent fit for a longer period to that he can come back to us in the Test format.

"He is very disappointed with the fact that he has not been able to recover in time, but the things have been laid out to him (over) what needs to be done to get back to full fitness".

India will be missing middle-order batsman Rohit Sharma, who has returned home after the birth of his daughter.

Indian batsmen may have been inconsistent with the bat but the bowling line-up of the visitors has been absolutely phenomenal in the ongoing series.

"Every team that comes here wants to win, obviously".

India squad: Mayank Agarwal, KL Rahul, Hanuma Vihari, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli (capt), Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Umesh Yadav.

His bowlers pick themselves so captain Tim Paine fielded questions about batting permutations should, as has been reported, opener Aaron Finch and all-rounder Mitchell Marsh be dumped for Marnus Labuschagne and Peter Handscomb.

"We know how good a cricketer he is, he's really skilled in all facets of the game", Paine said.
