Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho clarifies top four 'miracle' comment

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho expects a hard test against Arsenal in the Premier League on Wednesday but he suggested on Tuesday that his opponents may be fresher because they are playing in the Europa League.

Manchester United fielded a makeshift back three in Saturday's 2-2 draw at Southampton, with midfielders Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay drafted in alongside Phil Jones - playing his first league game since August.

Mark Lawrenson believes Manchester United will upset the form book and secure a 2-1 win against Arsenal at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Here, Press Association Sport takes a look at the two managers ahead of the clash at Old Trafford. I think, far from a miracle, we just need to not to be so unlucky with the problems that we have. "And this year with more problems that we have had, it proves what I said at the beginning of the season, that it would be a very hard season".

"[It] doesn't matter the system we play, [it] has to do with the characteristics of the players", said Mourinho in his post-match press conference.

"There are six teams that should stay in the first six positions, season after season, and two of these teams are staying outside the top four".

Mourinho suggested after the game that it would be a miraculous achievement if Manchester United finish in the top four, but the Portuguese has done a volte-face on those comments.

"The investment Everton made was phenomenal, and obviously there was a great improvement in that team from last season in relation to this, but I don't think Everton will be in front of Manchester United at the end of the season", he said. For example, last season it was Arsenal and Chelsea.

However, Mourinho insisted the performance levels of the players should not be driven by their relationship with him, but out of respect for the shirt.

Marcus Rashford was another who sustained a knock against Southampton, with Mourinho revealing after the game that the forward was asking to come off.

United have many issues under Jose Mourinho but one of the biggest is that the manager appears to have no idea what his best team is.
