"The leadership group came to me earlier in the week and asked me to deal with it in a way I thought was appropriate and I thought this was the appropriate way", he added.

Winning just four out of their nine Test matches this year, against Argentina, South Africa, Ireland and Italy, the former Wallaby said the Australians need to build up a repertoire against stronger teams to contend for the 2019 World Cup title.

Michael Cheika has denied he tried to cover up the real reason for Kurtley Beale's surprise axing from the Wallabies team, after it emerged he was dropped for allowing women into his hotel room.

"We had three disallowed tries, because I'm counting that as one", Cheika said.

Cheika declared on Thursday that Beale's omission was due to form, but after news broke in Australia about the suspension he denied he'd been trying to cover up the suspensions.

"No, I don't think there is a divide whatsoever. (But) once it comes out and there's whispers, then I have to set the record straight, which is what I'm doing".

"If the skipper says that's not happening or that's the team rule no matter what it is, you go against it no matter what it is, whether in this instance it was a family member or whatever it is, doesn't matter, that's the rule".

Turning his focus to Saturday's game, Cheika said: "I suppose [we do have our] backs to the wall, but the players are committed to going to the well more than they have at any stage this season".

"It's extremely hard. There's no way around it".

"Absolutely, because the alternative is that they realise they could have just brushed it under the carpet and no one would have been any the wiser".

"At the end of the day you've got to call it, and they did, and I support that".

He said it had been a bad year, but was convinced Australia weren't that far off the mark and pointed out the Wallabies had been hit by injuries to key players throughout the year.

England prop Kyle Sinckler sledged the Wallabies for being '****ing snitches' in the aftermath of their hotel room scandal.

Speaking to reporters earlier in the week, Castle said there would be a usual review process once the Wallabies returned to Australia, with any changes to be made before Christmas.

"In this squad here there are 10 players who played in the last World Cup squad". When I say a long way, we've got a period of time to get to where we want to go and we want to take the steps to do that.

He has been playing in the number eight position to accommodate Hooper on the flank, but has won the majority of his 77 caps on the side of the scrum.

"I think that piece is really important".
