"I think it [the award] loses all value if he is not leading the best players in the world".

Barcelona was already qualified for the next round before kicking off at PSV Stadium and was uncharacteristically scrappy at times until a moment of Messi magic finally gave his team the lead in the 61st minute.

In the group's other match, substitute Christian Eriksen scored as Tottenham beat Inter Milan 1-0 at Wembley and those teams will fight for second place in the last round.

There will also be plenty on the line for the club's final game of the group play in the league, though it will be for opponents Tottenham rather than for the Blaugrana.

Despite winning the game, Barca spent large parts of the match on the back foot.

"It is our style of play that we take a lot of risks", said Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde. "If we make mistakes in our midfield it is tough, but it is part of our risky style".

PSV had two golden chances of their own late in the first half, but Luuk de Jong saw his towering header hit the crossbar before Denzel Dumfries somehow failed to bundle the rebound home.

PSV had a lifeline in the 83rd minute, however, when De Jong headed an Angelino cross into the bottom corner to continue his excellent run of form.

De Jong made amends from his earlier miss lobbing Ter Stegen from six yards with a header in the closing stages. We gifted them too many counter-attacks and free kicks and they had a lot of chances.

Missing the injured Luis Suarez, Messi was operating in the number nine role for Barcelona, and the Argentine started to see more of the ball as the first half developed.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously had reported that La Liga giants, Barcelona, on Wednesday night, November 28 continued with their impressive campaign in the Champions League as they stunned Dutch side PSV Eindhoven 2-1 at the Philips Stadion to seal a last 16 spot in the competition.
