First Lady Melania Trump Unveils 2018 White House Christmas Decor

Melania Trump, the United States First lady, has now unveiled the 2018 White House Christmas Decorations with a patriotic theme "American Treasures" recognizing America's "unique heritage".

It was instant meme material.

There were lots of references to the horror movie The Shining.

The more we look at it, the more this appears the case.

Just like previous year, Christmas came early for the internet, as people on Twitter couldn't resist joking about the first lady's chosen holiday decor. The sunny hallway is lined with two columns of pine trees that are solid red and lack decorations.

During December, the White House will open its doors for more than 100 open house events.

Also on display are the customary gingerbread house and the traditional White House tree, which stands at 18 feet (5.5 meters) tall.

"The choice of red is an extension of the pales, or stripes found in the presidential seal designed by our Founding Fathers".

Ornaments adorning garlands in the Red Room feature Melania Trump's "Be Best" anti-bullying campaign logo.

A couple of new traditions for the Trumps were also visible: The Melania Trump "signature wreaths" (pine circles with red bows) that made their debut past year have returned, displayed on White House exterior windows.

But a different tradition was abandoned this year.

Her spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, said Trump decided "to let the decorations speak for themselves".
