Alabama Owns Top Spot in First CFP Rankings of the Season

The top five in the first playoff rankings were Alabama, Clemson, LSU, Notre Dame and MI.

The Big Ten looked like it had a decent shot at putting two teams in the playoff when the season began, but the Big Ten West imploded and the East will have a single one-loss team at best. "By comparison, Notre Dame has three such wins". Most notably, it appears Notre Dame is the biggest roadblock toward OU being able to punch its ticket for the third time in four years.

Interestingly, the ACC, viewed by most experts as suffering through a down season, had five teams in the top 25, one more than in the AP poll. Those teams are now in line to be involved in semifinal games.

As expected, undefeated juggernaut Alabama was ranked first, followed by Clemson, LSU and Notre Dame. What teams do you think were left off and do you agree with the top four teams?

The rankings, which in their final release determine which teams make it into the four-team national championship playoff, featured the Iowa Hawkeyes (6-2) at number 16 and the Iowa State Cyclones (4-3) at number 24. The playoff system was enacted in 2014, allowing a committee to name the top four teams which will go head-to-head for the title.

As we said above, we will keep you posted every Tuesday night when new rankings are posted. If it's a home game, you can give the host a standard three points or use our home-field advantage measures, which give fewer than three points for most teams. Notre Dame still faces off against a tough Northwestern team this week and MI still has Penn State and Ohio State left on the schedule.

The rankings, formulated by the NCAA's playoff committee, are based on current resumes and in turn the poll is essentially reset and re-ranked each week. Right there we have three playoff spots taken, and only one Power-5 conference represented.

LSU beats Alabama in their upcoming regular season matchup but then loses to the SEC East champion (Georgia or Kentucky) in the title game.

Clearly, there's no way Notre Dame gets in the final four without running the table. Iowa State may end up with eight or nine wins. Four games matching top-20 teams are on tap Saturday, including Alabama at LSU and Georgia at Kentucky.

Some college football fans may remember the 2007 season, which was fantastic from a perspective of playing hot potato with the highest rankings in the country. A&M closes the season with a showdown against No. 3 LSU.

The final rankings are revealed on December 2, when the playoff matchups and teams going to the New Year's Six bowls are announced.
