Secretary Pompeo: We have great concerns about China's actions, disagreements

China hit back angrily, implying that it is the United States that has a track record of meddling in other countries' business.

The Beijing stop could be tense as it comes days after Vice President Mike Pence delivered a blistering speech accusing China of military aggression, commercial theft, rising human rights violations and electoral intervention against Trump. He added that China "wants a different American president" and that the nation "is meddling in America's democracy" ahead of the midterm elections, he said.

Wang Yi, China's foreign minister, said trade disputes, challenges to Chinese sovereignty and criticism of Beijing's domestic and foreign policy had harmed relations.

Wang said cooperation should be the only choice for China and the U.S., but denied Beijing was interfering in United States domestic affairs.

Stephen Biegun, new USA nuclear envoy who was accompanying the secretary, said he offered on Sunday to meet his counterpart, Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui, "as soon as possible" and they were in discussion over specific dates and location.

In the same piece, Chen Dingding of Jinan University in Guangzhou said China had developed under its own steam to become the economic giant it is today.

"There's a lot of logistics that will be required to execute that", Mr Pompeo told a news briefing in Seoul before leaving for Beijing.

Pompeo and Kim made "significant progress" in "a long process" to denuclearize North Korea and "will continue to make significant progress and we are further along in making that progress than any administration in an awfully long time", he said. He and Biegun both said they expected meetings at the working level to begin soon and become quite frequent before the next summit.

Pompeo wished Xi a happy birthday when the two met on a trip to Beijing in June. Soon after the secretary of state left the country on his last visit, North Korea issued a statement lambasting his "gangster-like" demands. North Korea has shut it down in past negotiations - and then reopened it. USA officials also made no reference to past statements about wrapping up denuclearization by 2021, a deadline that Trump and Pompeo have since backed away from.

This time, Kim was satisfied with the "productive and wonderful talks" with Pompeo, according to the regime's Korean Central News Agency.

The meeting was apparently productive, and they even discussed another summit between Kim and President Trump, Reuters reported.

Kim is ready to invite worldwide experts to inspect the Punggye-ri nuclear test site, which Pyongyang invited global journalists to witness being demolished in May, according to Pompeo.

Pompeo said this could happen "as soon as we get it logistically worked out", adding: "Chairman Kim said he's ready to allow them to come in".

Pompeo met with Kim for three and a half hours, which included a 90-minute luncheon, and then flew to Seoul later Sunday to share the outcome with South Korean officials.

"Together with Mike Pompeo, Kim Jong Un appreciated the positively developing situation on the Korean Peninsula", said KCNA.
