Ricciardo was running in fourth place when his auto lost power exiting the Turn 11 hairpin early in the race, forcing him into his seventh retirement of the season.

Ricciardo, who now races for Red Bull alongside Max Verstappen, was forced to retire at the US Grand Prix on his ninth lap due to a mechanical failure.

'I'm sure he will have a word with his future employers about this because it's so frustrating losing him from races.

'It was an identical issue to that which he had in Bahrain where it was a complete shut down.

While he has two victories to his name this season, Ricciardo has yet to finish on the podium outside of those results and Horner believes he would have ended that drought on Sunday given the pace shown by Verstappen in recovering from 18th to finish second.

To add to his disappointment, Ricciardo's team-mate Max Verstappen went on to finish second and just behind race-winner Kimi Raikkonen.

Boss Christian Horner has praised Red Bull driver Max Verstappen for battling back from a hard start to eventually fire in 2018. "I think within the team there are secretly some jokes being made about it", he told the Dutch broadcaster Ziggo Sport.

"Hopefully we've got enough components in our [engine] pool for him not to take a penalty [next weekend in Mexico]". It was the other way around a year ago with Max. "He knows it's not the team's issue, he knows it's nothing we have done and he can not get his head around why it keeps happening to him".

"When I signed, I knew that there was work ahead", Ricciardo admitted, "But I know that they're putting a lot of effort into making things better and expanding a lot of departments and trying to make '19 stronger".

"Next year with the Honda engine I think we can fight for the world championship", said Marko.

"We are hopeful that it will be the same again this year, and realistically it is our last shot at winning a race between now and the end of the year".
