Paul Scholes on why Pogba isn't replicating Juve form: He's too 'cocky'

Paul Scholes says even Lionel Messi would struggle to shine in the current Manchester United team and that the struggling club are being laughed at by their rivals.

United have endured a torrid start to the 2018/19 season, now in eighth position after their last-gasp 3-2 victory over Newcastle before the worldwide break.

"I look at the current squad and I don't think there's a lack of quality there", Scholes, who won 11 Premier League titles at Old Trafford, told ESPN.

Although we wish United handed out more opportunities for first-team football to academy players, the reality is that the Premier League has become way too competitive in recent years, with numerous top clubs spending hundreds of millions of pounds each window to secure Europe's best. "I'm thinking more of a [Kevin] De Bruyne, [Eden] Hazard or David Silva".

Scholes, in a wide-ranging, exclusive interview with ESPN on United's form, was talking about the January signing of Sanchez from Arsenal, and why he, despite his victor against Newcastle earlier this month, has yet to hit the ground running at Old Trafford. "It would be a shot on my own foot to badmouth the guy who gave me the first opportunity to play and is still giving it".

"I loved that team, especially Pirlo and the way he was so relaxed as he controlled the game".

"It feels like we have turned into a Liverpool or a Man City".

The United boss is thought to have been unhappy with the club's transfer business in the summer, as he feels that they have failed to add a suitable centre-back to strengthen the team sufficiently.

United head to Stamford Bridge on Saturday before hosting Juventus in the Champions League.
