Spain vs. Croatia - Football Match Report

Spain host World Cup runners-up Croatia in Elche on Tuesday and Aspas is poised to start again.

Marco Asensio was arguably the star of the show and scored his first global goal on 33 minutes by capitalising on some sloppy midfield play to collect the ball 25 yards out and beat Lovre Kalinic with a left-footed rocket.

Croatia, which lost the World Cup final to France, fell apart after defender Sime Vrsaljko had to be substituted due to an injury just minutes before Spain's first goal.

Spain now have six points in UEFA Nations League Group 4 after two games.

More importantly, they are off to a winning start under Luis Enrique, with their performances in Elche and against England at Wembley a stark reminder of the quality they possess, which seemed to go missing in their tempestuous World Cup campaign.

Sergio Ramos, one of the remaining members of Spain's golden generation, added the fifth goal with a header off a corner kick in the 57th minute, and Isco closed the scoring in the 70th after another set up by Asensio.

Ten minutes later Marco Asensio made it 2-nil with a powerful shot.

In the other League A match on Tuesday, Belgium won 3-0 at Iceland in its Nations League debut.

Dalic's men did play a friendly on Thursday night, drawing 1-1 with Portugal as Ivan Perisic and Pepe exchanged goals, but he has to deal with several team changes since the World Cup. Yet despite missing one of their main playmakers, there was no lack of creativity in the side.

A memorable result was capped by a stylish sixth from Isco, who took a touch from Asensio's pass and fired high into the net across the helpless Kalinic.

In contrast the Belgians poured forward, with Thomas Meunier hitting the foot of the post midway through the second half, and Lukaku blazing a late shot over the bar before steering the ball past Halldorsson to complete the rout.
