Watling said the Kremlin might exaggerate the range of the exercises which will take place in Siberia and Russia's Far East as a signal for its domestic people.

The drills began as Putin hosted China's leader Xi Jinping at an economic forum in Vladivostok.

It is thought to be the largest Russian military drill since the Cold War era.

Meanwhile Russia's foreign ministry has sought to downplay the significance of the sheer volume of forces deployed for Vostok-2018 as well as Chinese cooperation.

"This is a milestone for Sino-Russian military ties", Alexander Gabuev, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Moscow Center, wrote on Twitter.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the drills were justified given "aggressive and unfriendly" attitudes toward Russian Federation by the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation block.
