The government's long-standing official death toll from Maria has been just 64 for the island territory which is part of the United States.

From September 2017 to February 2018, 2,975 people died because of Maria, according to a study released by George Washington University's Milken Institute School of Public Health on Tuesday.

The revised death toll is almost 50 times the previous estimate of 64.

He's also creating a commission to implement recommendations in the new report, and creating a registry of the people expected to be most vulnerable in a future storm, such as the elderly, bedridden or kidney-dialysis patients.

Trump's comments on Wednesday were not the first time he has praised the federal response in Puerto Rico.

Trump defended his handling of the crisis, claiming that his administration did a "fantastic job" and that Puerto Ricans are still being helped, but Yulin Cruz, the mayor of San Juan, had a different view.

Trump said Wednesday that Puerto Rico faced issues with its infrastructure prior to the storm, falsely claiming that the USA territory's power plant was "dead" before the hurricane hit. "Stay here and be homeless, or move to Puerto Rico and be unemployed or have no home and struggle there". Until the recent update, Puerto Rico's government had said only 64 people died as a result of the storm.

"It's a very strong message in Puerto Rico and people addressing natural disasters all over the world: Don't treat people as homogenous groups", Santos-Burgoa said.

"It seemed like it was better to dance to President Trump's tune than to tell the truth that we were all seeing." she said.

During a visit in October, Mr Trump had suggested officials should be "proud" the death toll - at the time only 16 - was not as high as "a real catastrophe" like Katrina.

The count in Puerto Rico might presumably presumably presumably change as the executive continues to investigate deaths from the storm, Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Roselló acknowledged.

Through it all, Trump has maintained that Puerto Rico's languishing infrastructure and geography hampered efforts.

"We have now a container overcrowded with, you know, these dead bodies", said Quinones.

Ten days after the hurricane made landfall, Trump lambasted news reports about the troubled situation in Puerto Rico in a series of tweets.

The study also found that government emergency plans in place when Maria hit were not designed for hurricanes greater than a Category 1.

A federal judge on Thursday rejected a request to block the USA government from cutting off aid to hundreds of Puerto Rican families who fled the hurricane-ravaged island in 2017 and are living in hotels and motels across the United States.
