DeChambeau's sensational form means he is nearly certain to be handed one of the three "captain's pick" slots for the Ryder Cup which will be revealed by U.S. skipper Jim Furyk on Tuesday.

The 2018 Ryder Cup takes place from 28-30 September, and is shaping up to be sensational if Europe can match the bookies' favourites in the US team.

Paul Casey declared himself "very honoured" to be back in Ryder Cup action for the first time in 10 years after earning a captain's pick from Thomas Bjorn.

DeChambeau was part of a crowded leaderboard early in the final round, with 17 players at one stage bunched within two shots.

England's Poulter, a talisman for Europe in past Ryder Cups, has returned to form this year after missing the 2016 defeat by the United States at Hazeltine.

"When you'd be partnered with [Woods] you'd let him do all the work because he's so good", explained Phil Mickelson, who paired with Woods at the '04 Ryder Cup and went a disastrous 0-2. His last time overseas was at Gleneagles, where he infamously closed out a losing press conference by questioning captain Tom Watson and the direction the PGA of America was taking the USA team.

He has risen from 656 to 26 in the world this year. A birdie on the final hole would have given the 27-year-old Mexican a tie for third and a reasonable chance at going to the Tour Championship.

"I only wanted to be a part of the team if I felt I could be a great contributor, which I know I can be".

The left-hander, who was 10th in the USA standings, shot his lowest round of the season on Monday, an eight-under-par 63, to finish three ahead of Woods.

Still, he's an all-time great and pickings got a little thin for Bjorn.

The 2018 Ryder Cup gets underway on September 28 and the buzz is building with both team captain's to reveal their wildcard picks this week. However, after a fourth surgical procedure on his back and a lengthy recovery, he has been able to compete in 16 PGA events in 2018, accumulating five top-10 finishes, including second place at the PGA Championship, plus a sixth-place showing at the British Open. "And it showed, and it paid off".

Woods will no longer be a vice captain, though Furyk said he would continue to lean on his advice.

"I'm hoping that I'm one of them". I'm excited to be a part of this team.

Ton Finau, Xander Schauffele and Kevin Kisner are all in contention to join the aforementioned trio and automatic qualifiers Brooks Koepka, Patrick Reed, Rickie Fowler, world no 1 Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Webb Simpson, Justin Thomas and Bubba Watson. "And naming these three players, that's what we've done".
