Boeing, SpaceX human spaceflight postponed to 2019

NASA has officially announced the scheduled test flights for SpaceX and Boeing under the agency's Commercial Crew Program. Both Boeing's CST-100 Starliner and SpaceX's Crew Dragon will need to meet stringent safety requirements and prove they are fit for regular flights. Some, however, deem that target ambitious.

The five astronauts assigned to the first flights gathered Friday at Johnson Space Center in Houston for the announcement.

All nine astronauts have military experience, and most are seasoned veterans of space.

"I'm sure that there is at least one Russian language instructor out there who thinks that having me fly a USA vehicle is not a bad idea", Cassada said. As the other astronauts donned NASA patches on their blue jumpsuits, Ferguson wore a Boeing applique.

SpaceX is aiming for its first Crew Dragon demo mission or Demo-1 to take off this November and Demo-2 to fly by next April, and plans to launch it on the back of one of its own Falcon 9 rockets from historic launch complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It will be Mr. Glover's first time in space. That flight is now projected to lift off in April of 2019. Both companies have hit a few snags along the way, though, so it's not clear who will launch first. With 322 days in space, Williams is sixth all-time on NASA's spaceflight endurance list and second all-time among female astronauts. The first mission astronauts for SpaceX Crew Dragon include astronaut Victor Glover and Michael Hopkins.

A recent mission abort by Boeing resulted from leaking engine fuel, and USA astronauts have until now taken Russian Federation capsules to the space station - at a cost of up to $82m for a seat.

By handing off crew and cargo runs to the space station - which will keep orbiting until at least 2024 - NASA has set its sight on the moon and Mars, developing the Orion capsule and the massive Space Launch System rocket. He also helped make the space station a home by delivering a kitchen, bathroom, sleeping quarters, water recycling system and exercise machine during the STS-126 mission.

Eric Boe was born in Miami and grew up in Atlanta. Robert Behnken, a former Air Force colonel, will join former Marine Corps colonel Douglas Hurley on the Crew Dragon test flight. While in the Air Force, he flew in 55 combat missions over Iraq. If any further delays creep up, NASA's astronauts may be temporarily stranded on Earth. He flew on a Space Shuttle Endeavour mission in 2008 and a Space Shuttle Discovery mission in 2011. Boe, Ferguson, and Nicole Aunapu Mann, a spaceflight rookie, will fly aboard Starliner sometime in mid-2019. She has a master's in mechanical engineering. He is a Navy commander, aviator and test pilot with nearly 3,000 hours flying more than 40 different aircraft. She was selected by NASA to be an astronaut in 2013. "The result is that we'll have a better and safer spacecraft", he said. He has logged more than 40 days in space across three space shuttle missions. The Government Accountability Office warned last month that it's likely the firms won't receive full certification until a month or two after the end of the Soyuz flights.
