After months of speculation over his future, James opted out of his Cleveland Cavaliers contract and he put pen to paper on a four-year deal with the Lakers worth $154million (£116.7m).

The Sixers have the ability to offer James a $38.25 million annual maximum salary over four years, potentially partnering him with two of the NBA's best young stars, Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. So how was the deal consummated?

Former Lakers superstar and five-time champion Kobe Bryant sent out a welcome to James.

George Hill ($19 million), Tristan Thompson ($17.5 million), JR Smith ($14.7 million) and Jordan Clarkson ($12.5 million) are all due big money next season, and their trade values aren't in a place where the Cavaliers can extract a significant return.

The Cavs could have significant salary-cap space in 2019-20, depending on what they do with Love, Tristan Thompson (who will make $18.5 million that season), Jordan Clarkson ($13.4 million), J.R. Smith and Kyle Korver. The fourth year of the contract will come with a player option and marks the longest contract James has signed since signing a deal for six years with the Heat back in 2010.

Can the Lakers beat the Golden State Warriors?

James isn't planning any more comments and there won't be a welcoming press conference or celebration in Los Angeles, a person familiar with his plans said Sunday night on the condition of anonymity.

Unlike past free-agent decisions, James wasted no time in announcing his next move. "We look forward to the retirement of the famous #23 Cavs jersey one day down the line..."

"Thank you Northeast Ohio for an incredible four seasons", James wrote. "I don't think LeBron is that type of parent, I think he wants to be around his son a lot and see his son play a lot". "This will always be home".
